The history of Greens

In 1919 Henry Wallis Green began selling vegetables by horse and cart; he grew them on his allotment in Barrow Lane, Hessle.

In 1923, the growing continued at Heads Lane, with his son Sydney W Green. Greenhouses were added. The main produce they grew was: Tomatoes, Vegetables, Brambles and flowers that could be grown outside. When Henry W Green retired Sydney W Green took over and began to grow Roses in 1933.

In 1951 the business, Sydney Green and his family, moved to Ellerker - the main reason being that more land was required to expand the business and as Hessle was being built up none was available near by! Approximately 32 years ago David and Paul Green (Sydney Green's sons) joined the business.

For a number of years they kept pigs but soon they wanted to expand by setting up the garden centre - so in approximately 1970 they gave them up to concentrate on horticulture. This was the time when Garden Centres began 'sprouting' up across the country and Green's Garden Centre began on a small scale with a few garden chemicals, pots and a limited selection of varieties of plants, not forgetting the roses!
